Anthropic Sets Up Biology Lab to Expand AI Drug Research
Anthropic has established a wet laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area, expanding its life sciences work beyond computer-based research. The company says it wants AI to help accelerate medicine development while keeping human involvement central to safety.

Anthropic has established a wet laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area as the artificial intelligence company expands its work into physical biology and life sciences.
The Dario Amodei-led company has said it wants to use AI to help accelerate the development of treatments for rare diseases. The new facility gives Anthropic the ability to conduct biological experiments directly, rather than relying entirely on computer-based evaluations or external research partners.
Two people familiar with the matter and Anthropic's head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, confirmed the existence of the laboratory.
A company spokesperson said the facility was not specifically established for drug discovery, but declined to provide further details.
Anthropic wants AI to work with laboratory robotics
Anthropic is exploring ways for its Claude AI system to direct robotic equipment carrying out biological experiments with limited human intervention, according to a source cited by Reuters.
The company said human involvement remains essential for safety.
Kauderer-Abrams said Anthropic's life sciences work involves balancing the potential for AI to accelerate medicine development with the need to carefully manage risks associated with deploying increasingly capable models.
The company is conducting some biological research internally while also working with external partners where that approach is more efficient.
Company expands investment in life sciences
Anthropic said in June that it planned to pursue preclinical research in areas that traditional pharmaceutical companies may find financially unattractive.
The company has also launched Claude Science and added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board.
Anthropic confirmed its acquisition of Coefficient Bio, a biotechnology company, although the company has not publicly confirmed the reported purchase price of about $400 million in stock.
