Her organisation, Oceankind, was founded in 2018 and has reportedly directed more than $120 million toward marine science, conservation and environmental projects, according to figures reported by TechCrunch.
Oceankind focuses on the health of oceans as well as the economic well-being of communities that depend on marine resources. Its work spans conservation, climate and ocean solutions, along with other environmental priorities.
What Oceankind funds
Oceankind uses two main funding approaches. Its standard grantmaking programme supports policy and conservation efforts, while its Labs Initiative provides funding for early-stage technologies aimed at addressing environmental challenges.
The organisation identifies climate change, overfishing, habitat loss and pollution as major threats to marine ecosystems.
“Oceankind employs two basic approaches,” the organisation says on its website, describing its standard grantmaking and Labs Initiative.
Reported grants have included $18.2 million to ClimateWorks for work related to commercial shipping emissions and carbon capture solutions.
Around $2 million was reportedly provided to Queensland University of Technology to develop autonomous robotics for coral restoration. Oceankind also directed $1 million to the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
Another reported grant, worth $100,000, went to SkyTruth to support its Cerulean system, which tracks maritime activity linked to suspected oil dumping.
Oceankind's funding scale
The organisation does not publicly list detailed award amounts for all of its grants. TechCrunch reported in 2022 that Oceankind had distributed more than $120 million through grants.
