Trump’s Tariff Threats Cast Shadow Over G7 Summit as World Leaders Meet in France
G7 leaders meeting in France face rising tensions over Donald Trump’s tariff threats, the US-Iran peace deal, Ukraine war, and efforts to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals.

G7 Leaders Face Trade Tensions, Ukraine War, and Iran Deal Challenges
Evian-les-Bains, France, June 15, 2026: The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations gathered in France for a crucial summit marked by growing concerns over US President Donald Trump’s latest tariff threats, global trade disputes, and ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
While the recent breakthrough in negotiations between the United States and Iran has eased fears of a wider Middle East crisis, uncertainty surrounding Trump’s economic policies has created fresh tensions among America’s closest allies.
The three-day G7 summit, taking place from June 15 to June 17 in the French lakeside town of Evian-les-Bains, is expected to focus on the future of global trade, the Russia-Ukraine war, supply chain security, and reducing dependence on China for critical minerals.
Trump’s 100% Tariff Threat Against French Wine Raises Concerns
Just before arriving at the summit, President Trump warned that the United States could impose a 100% tariff on French wine if France refuses to remove its digital tax targeting major American technology companies.
The warning has created diplomatic friction between Washington and Paris, especially as French President Emmanuel Macron hosts the summit during the final year of his presidency.
Macron strongly rejected the tariff threats, arguing that trade barriers between allied nations would damage both economies.
“Tariffs do not benefit anyone, especially tariffs between G7 countries,” Macron stated, signaling France’s unwillingness to give in to American pressure.
US-Iran Deal Brings Relief But Questions Remain
The summit comes shortly after the United States and Iran reached a preliminary agreement aimed at ending months of military confrontation in the Middle East.
