MIT Study Finds ChatGPT Use Linked to Lower Brain Engagement During Essay Writing

An MIT Media Lab study has examined how using ChatGPT during essay writing may affect brain activity, memory and a writer’s sense of ownership over their work.
The research compared participants who used ChatGPT with those who relied on search engines and those who completed writing tasks without digital tools. Researchers found differences in neural activity between the groups, with the strongest engagement recorded among participants who wrote without external assistance.
The study involved 54 participants recruited from universities in the Boston area. Researchers monitored their brain activity while they completed timed writing assignments and also assessed the essays and participants’ ability to remember what they had written.
The findings have attracted attention because generative AI tools are increasingly being used for writing, research and education. However, the research is currently available as a preprint and is still under review.
How the MIT ChatGPT study was conducted
Participants came from institutions including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wellesley College, Harvard University, Tufts University and Northeastern University.
They took part in three sessions in which they were given SAT-style essay prompts and 20 minutes to complete each assignment. Some participants also returned for a fourth session in which their writing conditions were changed.
The researchers divided participants into three groups. One used ChatGPT, another used conventional search engines and the third completed the assignments without digital assistance.
Brain activity was measured using electroencephalography, or EEG. Researchers also examined the written essays using natural language processing methods and collected feedback from participants through interviews.
